You want to wallpaper a room and you’re looking for quote from a paperhanger.
Great! I am going to outline exactly what you need to tell me so I can accurately give you a price.
I get a lot of phone calls from potential customers asking about pricing and these are the pertinent things I need to give you a quote.
Send A Photo Of The Wall
Please don’t just say I have a small wall in the bathroom, powder room, living room, etc…
Send me a picture of the wall so I can visually look at it. I need to see it so that I can get a picture in my head of any extra steps I’ll need to do to install your wallpaper and it look beautiful.
A small wall with plumbing fixtures, for instance, might take me longer than a large wall that has nothing on it.
I also need to see the condition of the wall so that I know what type of wall preparation needs to be done.
A professional wallpaper installer doesn’t install wallpaper on bare drywall. It needs to be primed and sealed prior to any wallpaper being hung.
Tell Me The Type Of Wallpaper You’re Buying
There are many types of wallpaper on the market today. Each kind requires different installation steps.
Glue
- Prepasted (pre-glued, just activate with water)
- Unpasted (need to paste glue on paper or wall)
- Peel and Stick (already sticky on the back)
Note: peel and stick wallpaper are sold and marketed to be easier to install and remove but they are not. In fact, peel and stick wallpaper can be a bigger pain than other types because they are hard to maneuver on the wall.
Materials
- Non-Woven
- Solid Vinyl
- Vinyl Coated
- Acrylic Coated
- Paper
- Natural Grasscloth or Natural Sisals
- Natural Wood
- Metallic Elements
- Fabric Backed Vinyl (Commercial Grade Type I and Type II)
Dimensions
- 20.50 inches x 33 feet
- 27 inches x 27 feet
- 36 inches x 24 feet
- 54 inches x 1 yard (Commercial)
Note: these are double roll dimensions. In the United States, wallpaper is priced in single rolls BUT packaged in double rolls. Without giving you a long history lesson, the reason dates back to the 1920s when we had triple rolls, quadruple rolls and so forth. When your installer gives you the amount of rolls you need for a wall, make sure to ask him or her if this is in single rolls or double rolls.
Repeat & Match
Most wallpaper have a repeat to them unless it’s a solid faux or grasscloth pattern. This lets me know how much waste I can expect when installing your wallpaper. The repeat can range been 3 inches and 25+ inches.
There is always waste when installing wallpaper but the repeat and match will affect how much waste there will be.
Here are the possible matches I need to be aware of.
- Random Match (no repeat, little waste)
- Random Reverse Hang (no repeat, little waste)
- Straight Match (repeat, medium amount of waste)
- Drop Match (repeat, high amount of waste)
- Half Drop Match (repeat, high amount of waste)
Note: I would recommend sending me the link of the wallpaper you bought or are buying. I can quickly look at it and tell you what I will need or any difficulties I expect.
Square Footage
If we come to your house then we can measure for you. But if we’re going to give you a price over the phone or email then we will need this information.
Take the width and height of the wall to get the square footage.
Timeline and Date Constraints
To save time, I try to schedule multiple jobs in the same area. I might do several homes in Katy one week, several jobs in the Inner Loop the next week and other jobs in Spring and The Woodlands the other week. So let me know what area you live in.
Maybe you can only have your wallpaper installed on certain dates when you or someone else is home. Or maybe, you can only have the wallpaper installed on a Monday or Saturday. I need to know this.
Some people are in a rush for an event while others are flexible. Please let me know this in advance so I can plan accordingly for you. If I am backed up, I can also let you know what to expect.
The more information you give me, the easier it is for me to give you a price and an exact date when I can come out.
